How stump grinding works
A grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to take the stump down in layers, normally 150mm to 300mm below ground level, deeper if you’re laying a base or replanting on the spot. What’s left is a hole filled with fine chippings, ready to top with soil.

Yes, once the chippings are cleared and the hole is topped up with soil or hardcore. Let us know the plan on the day and we’ll grind to suit it.
How long does a job take?
Most single stumps take under an hour. Larger or multi-stemmed stumps take longer, and we’ll give you a realistic estimate when we quote.
Do you need permission before removing a stump?
A stump on its own usually doesn’t need permission. If the original tree was covered by a Tree Preservation Order, or the property is in a conservation area, it’s worth a quick check with Sheffield City Council first — we’re happy to advise if you’re not sure.
